Scholarships & Grants for West Virginia High School Seniors
Parents of high school seniors in West Virginia can expect to pay on average around $10,000 a year in tuition for a West Virginia postsecondary school, according to American School Search. Traveling outside the state for college can raise the cost of tuition. Scholarships for West Virginia high school seniors come from a variety of sources and may help cut down on some of the costs.

Community Colleges

Depending on the career path a high school senior chooses, a local community college may fit into those plans and several in West Virginia offer scholarships. West Virginia Junior College sponsors three scholarships for high school seniors in West Virginia. A total of 18 seniors receive scholarships to attend West Virginia Junior College, and scholarship amounts vary depending on student need. At Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College, high school seniors from one of six West Virginia counties can receive a full tuition scholarship.
Universities

West Virginia four-year universities also provide scholarships for graduating high school seniors to attend those schools. West Virginia State University funds five scholarships open to graduating high school seniors. The scholarships offer full tuition, full tuition plus fees or full tuition plus room, board and all fees and are good for up to four years. Each scholarship requires recipients to have obtained a minimum ACT score, and several require students to be residents of certain counties in West Virginia.

Foundations

Private and public foundations throughout West Virginia also offer scholarships to high school seniors. The Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation sponsors a number of scholarships to West Virginia high school seniors who demonstrate leadership skills and character. Applicants must be attending one of four participating West Virginia schools---Concord University, Davis and Elkins College, Marshall University or Shepherd University. Students may major in any degree field with the exception of students attending Marshall University, who must major in civil engineering or safety technology.
Government Sources

The state government of West Virginia is also a source of scholarships. The West Virginia Higher Education Grant provides up to $2,100 a year for up to three years to a high school senior who will be attending a college or university in West Virginia or Pennsylvania. Applicants must be West Virginia residents and demonstrate financial need by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid along with the scholarship application.
