Orginally released in 1999, Adobe's InDesign software has gone through seven upgrades since its release and, as of 2011, is part of the software developer's Creative Suite 5 package. Used for designing and publishing graphics-based documents, InDesign is equipped with a variety of features that make documents created by the software ideal for use in print or online.

Tools
-
InDesign CS5 enables users to produce stylish page layouts using a variety of productivity tools, including rapid table creation, smart guides and multiple file placement. InDesign also allows users to create files with pages of different sizes. With features that include incorporated drawing tools, built-in special effects and three-dimensional artwork support, InDesign provides a wide range of creative possibilities. By using its cross-media publishing features, InDesign is able to produce interactive documents containing animation, video and sound that can be played back using Adobe's Flash Player.
Text Features
-
InDesign CS5 gives you the ability to create sophisticated textual content for print or online media with multiple typography tools. Paragraph styles, text wrap, drop caps and paragraph composer are but a few of the program's tools that empower you to produce professional-looking documents. Adjusting text using InDesign's kerning or leading features allows you to create headlines that span the entire page or are split between lines without needing to create a separate text frame. Editing text color or font is made simple with the program's user-friendly interface. With InDesign's document-installed fonts, you may never encounter another missing font again.

Interfacing
-
Adobe's InDesign CS5 works in conjunction with other CS5 software, including Illustrator, Photoshop and Bridge, a graphics interfacing program. Graphic images can also be dragged and dropped into an InDesign page layout from the computer's desktop or from a server, providing an instant link from the image's location to the InDesign file. Each of the software's files are capable of running Mini Bridge, which allows you to find and drop images from Bridge directly into the document without leaving InDesign.
Integration and Collaboration
-
Reviewing InDesign page layouts has been made simpler with the introduction of Adobe CS Review, an online service that, as of 2011, is offered free of charge for a limited time. With CS Review, InDesign documents can be shared with others who can give feedback and corrections within the the framework of the InDesign page layout. With Adobe's InCopy CS5 application, InDesign documents have the ability to be edited and checked for content accuracy through a collaborative workflow between design and editing personnel.
