Cool Dress Up Ideas at School

Kids can don cowboy and Indian costumes when studying American history.

Teachers and students can both benefit from dress up occasions at school. Dressing up can help students learn better and enjoy their classes more, while allowing teachers to drive home the lessons much faster. Students, especially younger children, become more interested in class when there's an element of creativity and interaction involved. You can even make it more enjoyable for them by giving away simple prizes to those with the best costumes.

Cowboys and Indians

Invite the students to dress up as cowboys and Indians as you teach them about the history of the old west, so they can appreciate the lesson better. They can either wear plaid shirts with leather vests, bootleg pants and cowboy hats or faux leather dresses or loincloths (on top of black or beige leggings), depending on their gender and costume preference. An elaborate headdress and other accessories can enhance the look of any costume.

International Costumes

Assign the students different countries to represent during United Nations Day. Ask them to research the national costume of their assigned countries and dress up accordingly. Include a variety of countries from different continents. On the day itself, have each student tell something about her assigned nation so everyone can learn more facts about the world.

Fairytale Characters

Have the students dress up as their favorite fairytale characters. Children always love dressing up as princes and princesses, fairies and elves. Divide them into small groups in advance of the dress-up day and assign a fairytale to each group. On the day itself, invite each group to act out its story for the rest of the class. Give prizes to the best group.

Animal Costumes

Let the younger kids dress up in their favorite animal costumes and share a fact about that particular animal. Little kids, particularly those in preschool, always look adorable in animal costumes. When studying about animals in science class, ask them to create their own costumes using paper, crayons and other art materials.

Work Uniforms

Tell the students to wear work uniforms for Career Day. Have them dress up as their dream careers or professions that interest them. Ask them to tell something about that particular job so other kids can find out about different career options.
