Even during economic downturns money is available for entrepreneurs to operate their businesses.

Finding the money to finance a business is a challenge that many owners of small, medium- and large-sized businesses face. Fortunately, money is available in the form of grants for these entrepreneurs to access as they continue to launch or grow their businesses. Many of the grants are provided through state and federal government agencies.

  1. Healthy Communities Grants Program

    • The United States Environmental Protection Agency awards approximately 20 Healthy Communities grants each year to small businesses, as of the time of publication. Individual grants range from $5,000 to $40,000. To receive the grants, businesses must conduct research or create products and services that reduce environmental and human-health risks. The work must strive to improve the environment and human-health conditions in urban areas.

    Rural Business Enterprise Grants Program

    • Rural Business Enterprise Grants range from $10,000 to $500,000 each. Companies that have fewer than 51 employees and whose gross annual revenues are less than $1 million can receive the grants. The grants are available to businesses that provide adult-education programs to residents living in rural areas. Rural areas are considered towns or cities with populations of 50,000 or fewer people. Rural-based companies can also work to develop land, perform construction, and renovate buildings, streets and roads in rural areas to receive the grants. Interested businesses should contact their local Rural Development State Office to apply for the grants. The number of grants awarded each year varies.

    Alcohol Research Education Project Grants

    • If a business researches the impact that alcoholism has on individuals, families and communities and also works to find biological and behavioral therapies needed to treat alcoholism, it can apply for an Alcohol Research Education Project grant. Additionally, businesses that work to increase public understanding, prevention and treatment of alcoholism can receive the grants. The grants are administered through the National Institutes of Health; the number and amount of grants awarded each year varies.

Small Business Innovation Research Program Grants

    • Through the United States Department of Education, businesses that conduct technology, engineering or science research-and-development projects can receive money to fund their work. Grants are awarded in two phrases. First-phase grants generally expire after six months, while phase-two grants are active for about two years. Businesses receive about $100,000 in phase one, and up to $750,000 in phase two of the grants. The purpose of the grants is to encourage technological innovation in the private sector. Each year, the number of grants awarded to businesses varies.

    Challenge Grants

    • Approximately 10 Challenge grants are awarded to businesses each year. The amount of individual grants varies. However, the maximum amount of the total grants funded each year is $1 million. Nonprofit organizations that provide educational, research and development products and services in the humanities can apply to receive the grants that are offered through the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional grants for businesses are available through the Small Business Administration and Grants.gov.
