Kids' Lemonade Stand Sign Ideas

A good product is important, but so are good signs.

A lemonade stand is a welcome sight on a hot summer day. It's also a fun way for kids to earn a little spending money. There are a few basics that are important to consider when planning a lemonade stand. You may have a good product and know a lot about good customer service, but without good signs to attract customers, your business could run dry.

The lemonade looks good, but what about the sign?

Would-be customers will be reading this sign from a distance through car windows and from the seats of bicycles. Use a large piece of white or yellow poster board and print letters with a bold, black marker. Letters must be clearly visible. An easel is a sturdy way to advertise a lemonade stand. Some children's art easels have a white dry-erase board on one side. Write on this surface with large, easy-to-read letters. Some easels also have a green or black chalkboard side. These are more difficult to read, but you can use one if you make large, block letters. You can also tape large poster or paper signs onto the easel; this will keep the signs up off the ground, making them easier for passers-by to read.

Keep the sign simple; too much information is distracting and difficult to read. Include the word "lemonade." You can include the words "homemade" if you make the lemonade from scratch, but a drawing of lemons or a tall, cool glass of lemonade is just as enticing. It lets customers know what the sign is for. Price is also an important piece of information to include.

Posting Signs

Well-run lemonade stands are a group effort. Take turns holding a large sign on the driveway or sidewalk in front of your lemonade stand. Hold it still and smile to attract visitors to the stand. Or, tape signs written on white paper to the sides of large cardboard boxes and place them on street corners near your home, if your town or city allows this. Place a brick or stone inside the boxes to prevent them from blowing away, and check on them periodically to be sure they haven't been moved. Hang a sign from a tree in your yard. Ask your neighbor on the corner if you can do the same on his property.

If you're operating a lemonade stand to raise money for a good cause, write that on your sign. Keep the wording simple and straightforward, and be prepared to answer questions about the organization or charity and the amount you plan to donate. Have fliers or pamphlets about the organization on your table for customers to take.
