What Are Bezels?

What Are Bezels? thumbnail
A plain, flat bezel adds a minimalist touch to a sleek watch.

The word bezel is likely from the French word biseau, which means beveled edge. And perhaps from Latin bis, which means twice. Bezels are basically metal rings or frames used as a facing and to hold another element or elements in place. Bezels are used to hold precious stones in rings, lenses on watches, coins attached to chains and are designed as faces for the fronts of desktop computers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Watch Bezels

    • A watch bezel serves one or more purposes. Its main function is to hold the glass or crystal face in place. Another purpose of a bezel may be to protect the watch against impact. Rotating bezels are incorporated into scuba diving watches to keep track of time. Finally, bezels serve as a decorative feature accenting the overall design of the watch.

    Jewelry Bezels

    • Jewelry bezels are square or rounded frames for holding cabochons and cameos in place. Cabochons are gemstones which have been shaped as opposed to faceted. Cameos are hard stones and shells which have been rounded and sometimes carved with pictures and designs.

    Coin Bezels

    • When people want to wear a valuable coin they often use a custom bezel made out of gold or silver which encases the perimeter of the coin and has an eyelet for attaching a chain. The bezels are shut by slightly bending the bezel wire over the edge of the coin with a smooth tool. You can make your own coin bezel with a soldering kit and small metal supplies found online.

    Bezels for Computers

    • On the front of desktop computers is a facing that is known as a bezel. It serves to frame the various devices, such as CD players and USB connections. Computer bezels also help to give a sense of style to a computer. Transparent Plexiglas bezels are popular among people who like to have customized products.
