The modern commercial miniature rose traces its beginning from a rose discovered growing in a home garden in Switzerland in 1918. From this little rose, Tom Thumb was bred in 1933 by Jan de Vink of Holland. Today miniature roses are widely available in all the colors of larger roses, and in many forms, including climbing and rose standards. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Miniature Roses

    • Miniature roses, including the micro-minis, grow 6 to 24 inches tall. The flowers are smaller than floribundas or hybrid teas. Aristocrat, with its dark pink flower, and Bee's Knees, with yellow- and cream-colored flowers edged in pink, will grow 12 to 24 inches tall. Pink Poodle has a beautiful dahlia-type pink-and-white flower and a strong fragrance. It grows to 16 inches tall. Sweet Chariot, with its purple, strongly scented flowers and a trailing growth habit, will mature at 10 to-18 inches tall.

    Climbing and Standard Miniature Roses

    • The climbing miniature rose Jeanne LaJoie will reach 10 feet in length at maturity. Its charming little pink flowers are abundantly borne in a full flush in June, followed by less flowery flushes throughout the season. Climbing Rainbow's End carries its bright red-edged yellow roses on 6 to 12 foot canes. Plant either against a trellis or a mailbox, or atop a plant stand. Miniature rose standards, or tree roses, are named cultivars grafted onto a central cane, onto which is grafted a rootstock. Miniature standards are available in 1-foot, 1 1/2-foot, or 2-foot heights.

    Mini-flora Roses

    • Since 1999, the American Rose Society has recognized mini-flora roses with their own classification. These small shrubs grow 2 to 4 feet tall. Also called patio roses, they are good candidates for container cultivation. Some of the most fragrant of smaller roses are found among the mini-flora class. Moonlight Scentsation and Overnight Scentsation are very fragrant mini-floras growing to 3 feet tall. Moonlight Scentsation's blossoms are white with a lavender tinge. Overnight Scentsation is pink. Abby's Angel will grow to 4 feet. Its blossoms are yellow, edged in red.

    Micro-minis

    • Micro-minis grow from 6 to 12 inches tall and have tiny flowers, from a diminutive ¼ inch to 1 inch across. The tiny foliage sets the blossoms off without overwhelming them. These little growers are perfectly suited to container growing. A 6-inch pot is roomy enough for most of these charming plants. They may be grown at the front of a flowerbed that receives close up attention. Tom Thumb, the ancestor of many of the modern minis, will grow 5 to 10 inches tall. Its flower is a rich, bright crimson/purple. Cinderella has white, fragrant blossoms and grows 10 to 12 inches tall. Popcorn has little single white flowers less than an inch across. Popcorn grows 10 to 12 inches tall.
