Foundation grants are available that provide funding for youth programs in the United States.

Over one million registered nonprofit organizations in the United States provide programs and services to individuals and families in need. Several provide services to youth in particular, focusing on education, health, shelter, recreation, and basic needs. Several private and corporate foundations in the United States target funding specific to youth, and building community supports for children and families. When applying, research the foundation to ensure youth programming is one of the foundation's target funding areas.

  1. The Mockingbird Foundation

    • Established by the alternative music group Phish, the Mockingbird Foundation provides funding for youth programs that support music education for children 18 and under. The foundation is especially interested in providing support for disenfranchised groups, including foster children, those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities, low income children, and those who are terminally ill. The foundation considers programs and projects that work to elevate self-esteem, provide musical instruments and allow individualized creative expression of participants. Grants range from $50 to $5,000, with deadlines on Feb. 1 and Aug. 1. Applicants are asked to provide a detailed explanation of the program or project, goals and benchmarks, target dates and a detailed budget.

    The Hasbro Children's Foundation

    • The Hasbro Corp. provides community youth grants via the Hasbro Children's Foundation in three target areas, health, social services and education, for children up to 12 years. The foundation's mission focuses on three main principles: programs for children with the most significant need, fostering self-esteem building and recreation for severely at-risk children. Additionally, the foundation provides community grants to hospitals and other health facilities that provide service to young children. Updated grant guidelines are provided each May, with a deadline for proposals of April 1 through June 1. Applicants may be asked to provide extensive details of the program or project and service partners.

    Target Community Giving

    • The Target Corp.'s Community Giving program provides funding for youth in areas of store operation across the United States. Grant applications are available at local Target chain stores, which distribute grants of $1,000 to $3,000, and requests for materials in the communities they serve. The retailer established the Target Community Giving Program in 1962, and donates 5 percent of the company's income to support community programs and services. The corporation has a special interests in literacy, and supports programs that enhance reading skills for school-aged children in grades 1-3. The arts are also an area of interest, providing funding for community arts projects and exhibits.

    The Libri Foundation

    • The Libri Foundation, committed to education and literacy, funds the Books for Children Program. Applicants are invited to submit grant requests for funding to provide new books to rural libraries across the United States. Generally, applicant libraries serve communities with a population of 5,000 or less. The applicant program must provide children's library services, and have a limited budget. The Libri Foundation provides grants matching community sponsors at a ratio of two-to-one. Libraries receiving funding have up to four months after the receipt of the grant to raise matching funds. Applications for grants must be filled out online and are due Jan. 23 and April 15.
