Tips on Classroom Training

Working with students in small groups helps them stay on task during the school day.

A classroom that is well-managed has fewer disruptions and more learning taking place on a daily basis. Learning how to manage a classroom effectively is one of the essential skills teachers will need to incorporate into their teaching repertoire. Using effective management strategies keeps the classroom running smoothly and students on task. Children thrive in an environment of structure where expectations are set and classroom rules are clear and consistent.

  1. Establish Rules and Expectations

    • At the beginning of the school year the teacher will want to have five rules posted in her classroom. Be sure to discuss the rules of the classroom the first day of school with students so they understand what is expected of them. Make students aware of the consequences for breaking rules as well as the rewards for following the rules. Follow through on your discipline plan so students can see that behavior in your classroom does have consequences.

    Classroom Disruptions

    • During class discussions you will inevitably encounter disruptions or students talking. Usually a look from the teacher or moving closer to the student will be all that is needed to get him back on track. You may also want to ask a distracted student a question to engage him in the discussion. If you need to talk to the student about his behavior do so privately. Do not discipline the student in front of his classmates so the student may "save face." This will help the student preserve his self-esteem while at the same time getting the message across that he must adjust his behavior for your classroom.

    High Expectations and Positive Reinforcement

    • Reward your students for following the rules such as working hard in class, not talking and not interrupting the teacher and other students. Set high standards in your classroom and relay to students that you expect them to follow the rules. You may use a sticker chart or classroom tickets that students may exchange for privileges or gifts to reward students. Students respond to positive reinforcement and will want to live up to your high expectations.

    Be Consistent with Classroom Management

    • Exhibiting the same even-keeled mood on a daily basis may be difficult for a teacher, but it is essential to maintain effective classroom discipline. You must be consistent in managing students who are off task. If students are fully aware of the rules at the beginning of the year, and the rules are consistently enforced throughout the year, students will be not be confused by the consequences of their behavior. You should not be too strict or too lenient, but have a middle ground where you are kind but firm, while maintaining order at all times in your classroom.
