Glock 39 Specifications

Glock manufacturers the 39 for law enforcement and home defense.

Glock firearms first gained fame --- though some would say notoriety --- for developing non-metal polymer frame handguns in the early 1980s. In 2003, the Austrian company manufactured the Glock 39 pistol. Like all Glock handguns, the Glock 39 builds off an earlier design; in this particular case, the 39 is a variant of the Glock 26, a similar subcompact that fires a different round. The company sells this weapon for law enforcement and personal defense use.

  1. Design

    • The subcompact Glock 39 features a double-action trigger mechanism and loads each new cartridge via its box magazine. Glock installed its three-tier Safe Action System on this gun. This system prevents unintentional firing via a trigger and firing pin mechanism, and if a user drops it accidentally. The company coated the hammer and barrel with Tenifer to enhance the durability of these metal parts.

    Ballistics

    • Glock produced the 39 as part of a series of weapons designed to fire the .45 G.A.P. cartridge, a new round developed by the company. This cartridge packs a .45-caliber bullet into a cartridge no longer than a 9 mm, which allows this .45-caliber weapon to achieve subcompact overall dimensions. A light 125-grain bullet will leave the Glock 39 at a velocity of 1,305 feet per second with a muzzle energy of 473 foot-pounds.

The Glock 39 contains a six-round magazine, a low capacity by Glock standards. Operators can fit the larger 8- or 10-round magazines of other Glock .45 G.A.P. weapons into to the Glock 39 as a way to increase its capacity (the Glock 37 and 38 also fire this cartridge, but use larger magazines). Glock set the trigger at 5.5-pounds pull weight. The barrel's rifling uses a right, octagonal configuration with a twist length of 15.75 inches.

    Dimensions

    • The Glock 39 sells in the subcompact handgun category. This gun's lightweight polymer frame construction gives it an unloaded weight of 19.33 ounces, or 25.33 ounces with a loaded six-round magazine. Its 6.3-inch length houses a 3.46-inch barrel. At the widest point on the handle, the Glock 39 spans 1.18 inches and the weapon has a height of 4.17 inches. Its trigger travels one-half inch. Glock sells this gun in a black finish.

When reviewing this weapon, former law enforcement officer Dave Spaulding noted that users could easily carry this weapon in a waistband or in the pockets of a winter coat. He suggested, however, that the short and thick overall grip might not suit the needs of law enforcement.

    Sights

    • Glock installed its Night Sight 3-point sighting on the Glock 39. The tritium in these sights gives the front dot and rear post a white outline when looking down the sights, even at night. On the Glock 39, the front sight sits 5.67 inches from the rear post. Spaulding noted that this weapon consistently placed 3-inch groups at 50 feet.
