The Best Used Guitars

A trip to just about any pawn shop will yield a selection of guitars, both electric and acoustic, to choose from. While the purchase of any guitar is subjective and often dependent upon the budget and needs of the buyer, there are some guitars that have stood the test of time and offer good purchase value for someone in the market for a used guitar.

  1. Gibson Epiphone

    • Any American-made Gibson that has been taken care of would be a good purchase as a used guitar, but an American-made Gibson can be expensive. Many guitars become collectibles the older they get, so purchasing a used instrument doesn't mean you're getting a better deal. Gibson is one of the mainstays in the music world, along with Fender, and the American-made versions are collectibles. Gibson does make Epiphone, however, and you can often find Epiphone replicas of Gibson's most popular American-made guitars in pawn shops at reasonable prices.

    Fender Stratocaster

    • Like Gibson, Fender makes instruments that have long been mainstays in the music world. American-made Stratocasters and Telecasters can command high price tags, but the versions of these instruments made in other countries, such as Mexico and Japan, are affordable and worth grabbing if you can find them used.

    Alvarez, Martin or Taylor Acoustics

    • Look for Alvarez, Martin or Taylor acoustics. All of these instruments hold up well and can often be found used in pawn shops or want ads in the paper or online. When buying a used acoustic, it's important to look the instrument over to ensure there are no cracks in the body, which could affect the sound quality.

    Silvertone

    • The Silvertone guitar used to be a very low-end brand of guitar made by Sears. Sears no longer owns the brand and the Silvertone name has been associated with quality mid-priced instruments. Silvertones often find their way into pawn shops and classified ads. While older Silvertones vary greatly in quality, newer Silvertones are typically very affordable and offer a good value for the money. SIlvertone makes replicas of many of the most common guitar types, such as the Les Paul and Stratocaster, as well as many of the more modern artistic shapes.
