Not all spiders are bad.

Spiders might look scary and some are even dangerous to humans and animals, but without spiders the world would not exist as we know it. Create a bulletin board to educate children about how these tiny creatures play a vital role in nature. You can also make a board about spiders in general as spring begins to set in. These boards can help children recognize the difference between harmful and friendly spiders as well.

  1. Types of Spiders

    • Create a bulletin board teaching children about different types of good and bad spiders. Adorn the board with blue poster board and paper spiders around the border for decoration. Showcase pictures of a common harmless garden spider, tarantula, jumping spider, wolf spider and brown recluse. Cut out a circular piece of paper and write about the similarities and differences between the different spiders. Feature fun facts about each type of spider and use red letters to write the word "Dangerous" next to the most harmful spiders.

    Spider Arts and Crafts

    • Create a bulletin board showcasing the children's spider arts and crafts. Use black poster board paper as the background and use cotton batting to make spider webs at the four corners of the board. Hang up paintings, drawings and other spider craft projects that the children make. You can designate one month as Spider Month, gradually make different types of spider projects and hang up new crafts each week.

    How Spiders Help Farmers

    • Decorate a bulletin board teaching kids about how spiders help farmers. Use red poster board paper to make a background. Construct small hay bales out of yellow paper or use real hay. Place these on the board along with a paper farm house, vegetables and a few animals. Tie four or five fake spiders on twine string and hang these down from the top of the bulletin board in various spots. Cut out pieces of circular paper and write facts on each sheet about how spiders help farms. Place the bubbles in random open spaces on the board around the farm house and on or near the hay bales. Spiders kill pests that harm plants, so farmers don't need to use pesticides and other chemicals. Spiders make their own webs among or near various plants and wait for prey. The spiders help to maintain a balanced eco-system and they don't harm farm animals or cost the farmer extra money for care like other animals. Spiders also keep the fly population down, which is beneficial for farm animals because flies can aggravate horses and goats.

    The Wonders of the Web

    • Design a bulletin board teaching children about the wonders of spider webs. These works of art have many hidden secrets that some people may not know about. Create a board featuring pictures of different spider webs along with the crafting spider. Write fun facts and information on the board about what spiders do with their webs like catch prey, make egg sacks and attract mates. Feature other wonders of the web such as the fact that spider is made from glands within the spider's belly and spider silk is stronger than steel.
