Due to its endangered status and the dangers of overdose, golden seal root powder is now reserved for topical salves, tea and internal remedies. Use golden seal root powder sparingly. Native Americans and Asians have used golden seal root powder to treat cold and flu, cuts, hemorrhoids, mouth sores, sore throats, yeast infections and as an appetite stimulant. Add 1/2 to 1 tsp. golden seal root powder to boiling water and sweeten to taste. Drink tea two to four times per day to treat cold, flu, sore throat, upset stomach and to boost the immune system.

Golden Seal Root Topical Salve

Put equal parts golden seal root powder, comfrey root, echinacea, calendula blossoms and myrh in a slow cooker. Cover generously with olive oil. Cook for five to six hours. Strain mixture through cheese cloth or muslin. Add beeswax to thicken and allow to melt. Add vitamin E liquid and essential oil. Store covered in cool, dark area or refrigerate. Use salve for cuts and skin ailments.

Look for other names for Golden Seal, including yellow root, orange root, eye root, Indian turmeric, yellow Puccoon, ground raspberry and jaundice root. Since it is hard to find, you may be able to locate it under one of these names. Leaves, stems, roots and fruit of herbs have different properties and are used differently. Use the correct part of the plant in herbal remedies and treatments.
Side Effects and Warnings

Avoid taking golden seal root powder if you have lupus. Golden seal stimulates the immune system, and lupus patients already have an overactive immune system. Do not take golden seal root powder with insulin, as it is a natural insulin. Other side effects include gastrointestinal problems, heartburn, nervousness, sensitivity to light (if used on the skin), vitamin B deficiency, blood clots and premature labor or miscarriage. There is no research to indicate that golden seal root powder can mask the use of illegal drugs in a urine test.
