Italian Potluck Ideas

Potlucks are all about bringing people together for any occasion without putting all of the preparation on the host. What better theme is there for a potluck than Italian food? Italy is the land of family, wine and food; enjoy the festivities of your potluck with all of the best dishes Italy has to offer.

  • Caponata, or Italian eggplant dip, is a classic Italian appetizer that can be served with pita chips, focaccia or a selection fresh vegetables. Another great antipasto dish is Parmesan-rosemary cheese twists. Use any cheese twist recipe and add parsley and rosemary to create that Italian flavor.

  • Focaccia is an Italian flat bread that can be served plain or spiced up with some garlic, rosemary or cheese. Bring a warming plate to the potluck, as focaccia is best served hot. Bruschetta and crostini are two types of Italian toasted breads that can be served with a variety of different dips and toppings. The only difference between the two toasted breads is that crostini is a much thinner slice of bread, while bruschetta is thicker and can handle juicier toppings.

  • Gnocchi are fluffy dough-like balls that melt in your mouth. Potato gnocchi is an easy dish to make and can be dressed up with many different sauces and herbs. Zita is another simple pasta dish usually served with a tomato-based sauce. Add mushrooms, zucchini or your favorite hearty vegetables or meats -- like sausage, beef or grilled chicken -- to add additional flavor and protein to the dish.

  • What is an Italian potluck without meatballs? Baked mini meatballs are perfect solo or can be added to almost any pasta dish. Stewed lamb with tomatoes and orzo are a great combination and fill the room with a delicious aroma. Lamb shoulder chops are easier to use than lamb shanks and require less stew time.

  • Mascarpone cream is a triple-creamed cheese that is soft and has a mild flavor. Added to fresh berries or with a scoop of chocolate ice cream, mascarpone is the perfect savory dessert. Ricotta cheese pie with a sweet graham cracker crust is another traditional Italian dessert.
