Bonfire Ideas
Whether you plan a summer bonfire by the sea, a Guy Fawkes bonfire or a winter bonfire for a New Year's Eve celebration, a bonfire will light up the night. Check your local by-laws for rules and regulations concerning fires as well as permissible areas to light them. Bring marshmallows and all the fixings for s'mores, a guitar for a sing-along and your bonfire party will be an instant success. Does this Spark an idea?

Kids
-
For a child's birthday a bonfire can be a novel idea if approached with safety. A portable fire pit is best as you can move it away from high traffic areas. One parent or helper should stay near the fire at all times to keep the kids away from it. Have a sing-along while sitting around the fire. For older kids, stage a camp-out in the yard and instead of a sing-along tell ghost stories. If roasting marshmallows exercise caution with younger kids and have adults or teens help out.
Teens
-
Teens will likely linger a lot longer around the fire than kids do and will require seating. Depending on the site of the fire, use lawn chairs, logs or benches. Encourage teens to bring their own musical instruments for a teen-oriented sing-along of current songs. If the bonfire party is in your yard decorate it with patio lanterns and candles and set up different areas for the teens to hang out. For food, roast hot dogs or have a barbecue with a flame-broiled or Hawaiian Luau theme.

Adults
-
Most adults are content sitting around the fire with a drink in hand, but you can end a birthday celebration, a barbecue or any other night with a fire. A bonfire paired with fireworks is a special way to finish off a block party, the Fourth of July or a Canada Day celebration. Light the path leading to your backyard bonfire with a trail of tealights placed in glass vases. The glass will reflect the light and keep the tealights from tipping over as well as give your guests a sneak peak of what to expect.
Winter Bonfire
-
A bonfire can be equally fun in the winter, especially if paired with a night of skiing or ice skating. Make cider and hot chocolate and warm your feet next to the fire. Dress warm and prepare for the bonfire in advance. If there's enough snow, build a seating area out of snow around the fire pit. Keep the snowy bench far back enough to keep it from melting. Organize a winter festival by combining ice skating, a bonfire and an ice sculpture competition with live music to light up those long winter months.
