Ideas for Circus Costumes

There are few places in the world where lavish costumes are as important as in the circus. Whether for Halloween, a costume party or just for fun, circus costumes always provide entertainment. Dressing up in a circus costume is not only amusing but the

costumes are also instantly recognizable. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Strongman

    • The strongman costume really only requires tight shorts and a tightly fitting tank top or muscle shirt. You can complete the look by adding a large mustache. To be even more convincing, carry inflatable weights that make it look like you are actually lifting weights.

    The Ringmaster

    • The ringmaster is arguably the star of the show and the center of attention in the circus. Unlike the other costumes, the ringmaster costume is formal. A combination of black dress pants, polished and shiny black boots, a black bowtie and a dress shirt are required. For the jacket, you need a jacket that is rather formal and includes a tail, while at the same time seems extravagant and kitschy. The more traditional colors that the ringmaster wears are a combination of red and gold, but anything that is flashy will work. Add a mustache and a top hat to complete the look.

    The Bearded Lady

    • There are no set guidelines as to what constitutes the right beard or the right dress. You can go over the top or subdued, the choice is yours. It is best if you can find a beard that matches your original hair color. Wearing a dress emphasizes the "lady" aspect of the bearded lady, but any feminine clothing will work for this costume.

    Clown

    • Clowns come in all different varieties. Different shapes and sizes, good and evil! Just about anything can go as a clown when it comes to outfits--you can keep it simple or have an elaborate clown costume by using mismatching and oversized clothing from your own wardrobe. For example, you can wear a multi-colored striped shirt, with a colorful oversized pant, held up with suspenders. Floppy and gigantic shoes along with a big, red squeezable nose (or you can paint a red nose on), complete the basic clown look. The makeup itself can take a bit of time. The more outlandish your costume, the more outlandish your makeup should be.
