Remy meets Linguini in Paris.

"Ratatouille", a 2007 animated Disney film, tells the tale of a rat named Remy who befriends a garbage boy in Paris and together they become a cooking sensation. If your son or daughter is a fan of the movie, why not create a "Ratatouille" themed cake for your next birthday party or special event. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Sheet Cake

    • Sheet cakes are one of the easiest ways to decorate a cake for a novice cake decorator. Start by making a sheet cake large enough to feed the guests. Frost the cake using a solid colored icing of your choice. Once the cake is iced, place small, plastic toys from the movie on the cake to create a scene. Add additional details, such as small pots and pans or plastic foods, around the characters to finish the cake. Movie themed toys are available at your local toy store and online retailers.

    Tiered Cake

    • Another option is a tiered cake. Either frost the cake with your choice of colored icing or cover it in colored fondant. Decorate the cake with two-dimensional images of the characters from the movie, such as Remy, Linguini, Emile or Django. To make the images, cut the silhouette of the characters out of gum paste or rolled fondant. Then paint the character's feature on the cut out. Apply butter cream to the back of the cut out and place it on sides of the cake tiers.

    Cheese Wedge

    • One way to carve a cake that requires little decorating skills is to make a wedge of cheese. Stack three or four round cakes on top of one another. Then cut a pie shaped wedge out of the side of the cake using a serrated knife. Cover the cake in yellow fondant or yellow butter cream. Add details to the cheese, such as holes or shading, using edible paint. Place a gum paste molded Remy or plastic Remy toy on top of the cake to finish it off.

    Stock Pot Cake

    • If you have carving skills, carve several stacked round cakes to create the shape of a stockpot. Cover the cake in rolled fondant and airbrush it silver to look like a pot. Fill the pot with gum paste molded vegetables, such as cut up carrots, celery and peas. Place the vegetables into the cake to make it look like a pot of soup. Mold a gum paste Remy with a chef's hat on. Place him on the edge of the pot. Cover a wooden skewer in fondant and paint it brown to look like the handle of a wooden spoon. Put one end of the skewer into the cake and the other into Remy's hand, so it looks like he is stirring the pot.
