Alternatives to Whey
Whey protein is used in exercise and body building to build muscle and reduce carbohydrates in a diet. However, not everybody can use whey protein. Some people are allergic or may just not want to pay a lot of money for whey powder supplements. More natural and less expensive ways of obtaining protein in a diet are available.
-
Eggs
-
Though egg yolks are known for containing a lot of fat and cholesterol, egg yolks also contain a lot of omega-3, B-12 and amino acids. Egg whites contain a lot of protein, so you can make an egg white omelet or boil eggs and eat whites separately to get the protein without the fat. Though yolks do contain a high amount of cholesterol, eating a few yolks a week won't ruin your diet plan.
Yogurt
-
Since yogurt is a fermented dairy product, it can be easier to digest than milk-based whey protein. Plain yogurt or organic yogurt with no added sweeteners or artificial flavoring tends to be the best choice for yogurt. Purchase yogurts with active or live cultures since this type of yogurt is better for digestive health. Not only is yogurt high in protein, but it is also high in calcium, which is essential for good bone health in women.
-
Cheese
-
Though cheese is known for being one of the more unhealthy dairy products, it can actually be a healthy source of protein. Preservatives, additives and yellow food dye make cheese unhealthy, not the cheese itself. Cheese actually contains easily-digested fat, vitamins A and D and calcium, all of which are good for the body. Cottage cheese is typically lower in fat and blends the healthy elements of cheese and yogurt into one product. Organic cheeses usually contain less milk for those who are lactose intolerant.
Protein Usage
-
Adding more protein into your diet works best if you eat protein throughout the day rather than once a day. Incorporate some form of whey alternative into each meal to help you while you are bodybuilding and exercising. You can add cottage cheese to your breakfast, boiled eggs to your lunch and crackers with cheese to your dinner. Avoid products that contain a lot of additives or preservatives, since these tend to cancel out nutritious elements in whey alternatives.
