What Is the Sony Vega?
Sony Vegas is a software program for multimedia editing that the Sony subsidiary, Sony Creative Software, designs and produces. However, Sonic Foundry, which Sony purchased in 2003, was the original developer of the Vegas software. Sony Vegas is a non-linear editing tool, which allows users to manipulate video and audio. Some versions of the software also allow for DVD and Blu-ray publishing.

As a non-linear editing tool, Sony Vegas allows a user to access any segment or frame in a clip of digital media. A user can then easily cut, copy or paste segments of media with a computer's cursor, similar to how a user can edit text with a word-processing tool. This non-linear technology allows Sony Vegas to incorporate audio-visual effects, such as transitions and fades. Before the 1990s, linear editing was the only form of media editing. Also known as tape-to-tape editing, linear editing required that editors cut segments of media and arrange them, in order, from beginning to end. Because all of the media was connected, altering one segment of media with linear editing resulted in changes to all of the media forward or downstream of the alteration.

Sony Vegas provides users with all of the basic tools required for editing movies, as well as more advanced effects for adding visual depth and style. For example, users can create title rolls for the opening and closing credits; add fade-ins and fade-outs for bridging scenes; and add subtitles or other onscreen text for providing viewer information. More advanced video editing functions of Sony Vegas include slow, fast and reverse-motion; picture-in-picture and green screen editing. While picture-in-picture allows users to incorporate separate viewing screens within the primary screens, green screen editing allows users to add in personalized backgrounds behind on-screen images.

In addition to providing video editing functions, Sony Vegas allows users to edit audio. Basic audio-editing options include removing background and otherwise unwanted noise from audio clips and adjusting panning and volume settings. Vegas also allows users to sync audio clips with video clips; to create movie soundtracks; and to record live audio for narration, voice-overs or background music.

Versions of the Sony Vegas software that include DVD Architect and Vegas Timeline technology are able to publish -- or author -- DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. While the least expensive version of Vegas, Vegas Movie Studio HD, does not come with these features, the HD Platinum, HD Platinum Production Suite and Pro versions of Vegas do include DVD and Blu-ray publishing capabilities.
