Does Georgia State Give Free Scholarships to Veterans?
The Georgia Student Finance Commission offers tuition assistance to veterans through the Georgia HERO Scholarship. This scholarship is limited to Georgia residents who have completed certain deployment requirements and their immediate family members. It may be used only at approved institutions in the state of Georgia.

Award Amount

The Georgia HERO Scholarship provides up to $2,000 per year to eligible full-time applicants. This scholarship may provide tuition assistance for up to four years for a total award of $8,000. Students who are not attending school on a full-time basis may be eligible for lesser amounts of annual aid through the program.
Eligibility

To be eligible, an applicant must be a veteran who was a member of the Georgia National Guard or U.S. Military Reserves and was a Georgia resident when he was deployed. An applicant must also have served for at least 181 days in a combat zone on or after February 1, 2003, or have been evacuated with a severe injury before completing 181 days of service. The children of such veterans are also eligible for assistance through this program, as are the spouses and children of Georgia veterans who were killed in action or who are 100 percent disabled as a result of injuries sustained in combat.

Approved Institutions

This scholarships may only be used at certain approved institutions within the state of Georgia. Approved public institutions include the University of Georgia, University of West Georgia, Georgia Southwestern State University, Georgia State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Approved technical institutions include Central Georgia Technical College, Savannah Technical College and Southwest Georgia Technical College. Approved private institutions include the Savannah College of Art and Design, Wesleyan College, Piedmont College and Emory University.

Along with a completed scholarship application, an applicant must also submit a copy of the veteran's DD214 military record or other acceptable military documentation. If the veteran was wounded or killed in action, submit either a copy of the death certificate or a copy of the military record of injury. If you are the dependent child of a veteran, you must include a copy of your birth certificate, certificate of adoption or documentation concerning your legal guardianship. Applications must be submitted to an applicant's college financial aid office no later than July 1 of each year.
