Requirements
- The BLS reports that a bachelor's degree is the typical requirement for entry-level employment as a graphic designer. Art and design programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Applicants to graphic design programs usually submit a portfolio of original artwork as part of the admission process. If you already have a bachelor's degree in a different field and wish to change careers, two or three years of graphic design study can qualify you for employment.
Training
- Bachelor's degree programs in graphic design cover topics including studio art, computer design, and design theory. Students in an undergraduate program also take general education courses in English, art history, social science and foreign language. At the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, graphic design majors participate in senior design studios where they develop a final project that is reviewed by a faculty panel. Portfolio development is another important part of a graphic design degree program; students use the portfolio to demonstrate their skills to prospective employers.

- Aspiring graphic designers need solid problem-solving and creativity skills. They must be able to communicate in writing as well as verbally and visually. Self-discipline is necessary as graphic designers are tasked with completing projects on time and under budget. Business acumen is helpful for self-employed graphic designers. A graphic designer also needs to stay abreast of design trends and changes in consumer tastes, the BLS observes.

- Employment for graphic designers is expected to grow by about 13 percent through the year 2018, according to BLS projections. Demand will be especially strong for designers in advertising firms as well as those with animation or web design experience. Graphic designers can better their job prospects by taking courses in business management and marketing, and developing proficiency in computerized software programs. Entry-level designers earned a median salary of $35,000 in 2008; freelance designers earned $57,000.
