Asking a date to the prom can lead to a memorable evening.

As the high school year ends, many seniors are excitedly anticipating the prom. Although proms are formal affairs, they started as end-of-the-year dances where seniors wore dressy clothes they already owned. According to The History of Prom, high school proms began during the first two decades of the 1900s, but extravagant prom preparations did not really begin until the 1950s. While seniors look forward to the prom, many nervously worry about asking a date to the prom. However, asking a date to the prom does not have to be difficult.

  1. Texting

    • If you are asking a date to the prom who is a friend, as opposed to someone you are dating, a simple text can be the perfect way to ask. If you are nervous about asking, texting will be less awkward. Ask what your friend is doing on prom day and if they want to join you at the prom.

    Locker Fun

    • If you are dating someone regularly, show up at her locker with a flower and ask her to join you at the prom, or leave a note in her locker inviting her to the prom. You can even accompany it with a magazine picture of a prom dress.

    Asking in Tune

    • If you sing or play an instrument, create a song asking your girlfriend to the prom. Try playing a few favorite songs first before surprising her with your special request. This idea can be customized to your relationship. You can serenade your girlfriend romantically at night or casually sing the song during the day.

    Balloon Bouquet

    • Purchase six balloons and write the words "Come to the prom with me." Put one word on each balloon and deliver the cluster to your girlfriend's house. On the last balloon, put check boxes for yes and no. Attach a marker to the sixth balloon. You can even purchase balloons in your school colors.

    Prom Hunt

    • Send your date on a mystery hunt. Let her find a corsage, a photograph of a prom dress, and school information about the prom. In the last box, put a photograph of yourself with a question mark.
