Use the winter weather to your advantage by encouraging customers to look their best -- use promotions, such as first-time deals, loyalty cards and even humor, to get your message across more effectively.

    • Christmas weather can be cold and snowy, and with less sunlight per day the season comes with it pale skin and colds and flu. Exploit this by promoting your tanning salon as a way to look healthy and tan during the harsh Christmas weather. Your promotions should remind people that Christmas is a party season, and they want to look rested and rejuvenated in all their party finery. For that reason, you should also target promotions at places where people want to look good, for example, local clubs, casinos, shopping malls and fashion stores.

    • Businesses should always encourage new shoppers as well as develop a strong connection with existing customers. Deal promotions are an excellent way to target both markets and are effective year-round, including Christmas. These deals could be printed as money-off vouchers, two-for-one coupons, or you might consider introducing a loyalty card that gives a free tan for every five sessions. Whatever the deal or offer, you must ensure that you are giving the customer some kind of incentive to use your salon -- this will make new customers feel special and existing ones feel appreciated.

    Be Funny

    • Humor can be a risky promotion style; but when it is done right, it can be very effective. The point of promotion and marketing -- particularly around Christmas time when other companies are promoting as well -- is to stand out and grab people's attention. Adding humor to a promotion can really get people laughing and talking. With the Christmas theme, why not tie in your promotion with the Christmas turkey: a campaign slogan like "don't roast the turkey without roasting yourself first" can be clever and effective. Other funny campaigns could include Santa Claus with a bronzed tan or wordplay on the name of your salon.

Other ideas to consider include direct mailing strategies, free store brochures, media interviews on TV or radio and advertising your brand over social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter.
