Time Capsules for Monuments
Time capsules can be placed in various locations, including backyards, gravesites and even at monuments. If you wish to bury a time capsule at a monument, you must obtain permission from the grounds or facility management before proceeding. This is true, even if the monument stands over a private burial plot. Once you have been given the go-ahead to bury a time capsule under or near a monument, care should be taken to create the right capsule.

Location
-
Choose an appropriate container for your contents, based on the location where you plan to bury your time capsule. Take exact notes regarding the size of the area where you will bury or store the time capsule. If you plan to bury the container underground, you will need to use a container that can withstand the elements. Make sure to take measurements so that you know how much space you have available for placing contents inside the container.
Organization
-
Make a list of all the relevant and important items you wish to include in the time capsule. For example, if the capsule is to highlight a person's life, list items relevant to that person, such as the date they were born, important events in their life, specific photographs that come to mind when thinking about that person and other items that could be used to describe them to someone who never knew them. If the capsule is to showcase a group or period of time, make the list inclusive of major events relevant to the group or period of time as a whole.

Standard Contents
-
Time capsules can include anything that helps tell a story through objects. Items commonly included in time capsules include copies of newspapers from the day a person was born or dies, or from the day the time capsule was created. Other options include photographs of the person you wish to honor throughout his or her lifetime, wedding rings, favorite pieces of jewelry, important books, magazine articles and pieces of clothing.
Special Contents
-
To make a time capsule truly personalized, you should include items that have significant meaning to the person or persons whom the time capsule is representing. Examples of specialized contents include sheet music or a CD of a favorite song, a loaded digital music player of songs and a flash memory drive loaded with pictures. Time capsules celebrating a single person should also include items related to any hobbies the person enjoyed, information on organizations or associations the person was actively involved in and even information related to his or her past education, such as diplomas or yearbooks.
