Host a Roaring '20s party, complete with decorations.

The Roaring '20s was a decade of opulence and fun. You can bring back the Roaring '20s by hosting a party complete with decorations, which will set the ambiance for the party. Encourage guests to come dressed in costume such as gangsters or flapper dresses for your Roaring '20s party. This will further set the tone for the party and add to the decorations you already have. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Posters and Books

    • It was during the 1920s that talking movies first came out. Hang posters that advertise movies that came out during the roaring '20s such as "Rin Tin Tin," "Steamboat Willie" and "The Jazz Singer." Place books that were popular in the 1920s so people can browse through them. Look for books such Zane Grey's "The Mysterious Rider," Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence" and books by Dorothy Canfield and Sinclair Lewis. These can act as decorations as well as conversation starters for your guests.

    Table Decorations

    • Jewelry can be used as decorations on tables. Spread out lengths of beads to separate dishes on the table and add a 1920s flair. Sprinkle sequins around the bare spots of the tables to fill in with a little more sparkle. Add fedora hats and flapper headbands for an added touch.

    Speakeasy

    • A speakeasy was a place where people could get prohibited alcohol if they knew the password or were sent there by someone "on the inside." Decorate a section of your home to be a speakeasy where people can be served cocktails. Post a "speakeasy" sign over the bar and maybe even disguise it a little by hanging a sparkly beaded curtain. You could even make the entire party location a speakeasy with a dance floor and a jazz band. Use lighted candles on tables spread throughout the venue and keep the electric lighting turned down low to really create the effect of a speakeasy.

    Picture Corner

    • Taking pictures is a great way to help keep memories alive. Set up an area of the party location with a gangster-looking car, either a real or a cardboard one, which you can rent or buy. Have each person attending the party get his picture taken in the car. You can photograph couples together. You could also set up a jazz stage, complete with costumes for those who did not wear them to the party. Couples can be photographed dancing on the stage to some of the music of the '20s.
