Twitter in Pop Culture

It's rather hard to ignore the presence of Twitter in modern society. Everywhere you look, the social networking site has established itself as a presence in one form or another. Celebrity Twitter feeds getting media attention, a Twitter logo on your favorite products and companies or even a network sitcom based entirely on a popular Twitter feed -- Twitter has become a major player in pop culture.

  1. Twitter

    • Twitter is an online social networking and "microblogging" service. Users sign up for free, and are able to post brief 140-character messages, called "tweets," about anything they like. They can also follow feeds from other users, including major companies, sports teams, celebrities and anything in between.

    Celebrity Tweeting

    • Many celebrities have become avid Twitter users, including actors Kevin Spacey, Tom Hanks and Jennifer Lopez. Many musicians and bands also use Twitter, including Eminem, Coldplay and Amy Lee of Evanescence. Even U.S. President Barack Obama has a Twitter feed. Many of these celebrities use their feeds to promote upcoming events that they're involved with, charities they support and to share daily insights with their fans.

    $#*! My Dad Says

    • Pronounced as "Bleep My Dad Says," $#*! My Dad Says is a CBS sitcom starring veteran actor -- and Twitter user -- William Shatner. The show is based on the Twitter feed of the same name, sans swear symbols, started by Justin Halpern. The original feed considers of colorful and often profane comments and musings made by his father. The show is the first in broadcast history to be based on a Twitter feed. It premiered in September 2010 and, at the date of this publication, airs Thursday nights on CBS.

    Twitter as an Information Source

    • Twitter is frequently becoming an element in many other media forms. Using Twitter, play-by-play updates on sporting events, important conferences and emerging world events can be made instantly. Some even use Twitter as a form of independent journalism, using the service and tweets posted on it to get a real-time view of events occurring in the world. For example, Breaking Tweets is an international journalism news website that uses Twitter to track world news and current events.
