Good Things About Natural Gas

Cooking is just one of many uses of natural gas.

Natural gas is a non-renewable fuel source produced from the heat and pressure on organic material buried in the earth's surface. Natural gas has become a source of energy that rivals oil and electricity for many applications in everyday life. While there are always efforts to increase the use of renewable clean energy, natural gas offers some positive advantages over some of the other traditional natural resources used for similar functions.

  1. Car Possibilities

    • Cars can run on natural gas. It's not a widespread trend, but some cars and transportation fleets have been built to burn natural gas instead of gasoline or diesel. According to the Eco-Friendly America website, the people who use these cars were paying 87 cents per gallon for natural gas in 2008 as opposed to the much higher gasoline price that was between $3 and $4 per gallon at the same time in many places in America. Also, cars that run on natural gas produce 20 percent less carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline powered cars.

    Cleaner Option

    • Burning natural gas for energy is far cleaner for the environment than burning coal, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Kids website. Natural gas produces fewer air pollutants and carbon dioxide than coal or refined petroleum. To get the same amount of energy that would produce 117 pounds of carbon dioxide when burning natural gas, coal would produce over 200 pounds and fuel oil would produce over 160 pounds.

    Domestic Supply

    • One big piece of good news for the United States and Canada is the availability of natural gas domestically. For many years American consumers have relied on oil from foreign countries to provide the energy needed to fulfill the country's demand. This is because America is the top oil consumer and only a minor producer. According to the Orange and Rockland website, 99 percent of the natural gas we use comes from North America and increased usage would reduce our dependence on oil from the Middle East.

    Dependable Supply

    • Unlike other sources of fuel for home heating, hot water, cooking and clothes drying, natural gas consumers never need to worry about running out. The gas is piped into the home from a central location, therefore eliminating the need to schedule deliveries.
