Girl Scout Uniforms of the '50s and '60s
Girl Scout uniforms have evolved since the organization began in 1912. "Influenced by supply, demand, and fashion, the modifications reveal the organization's response to the changing needs of girls," according to GirlScouts.org. Despite its changes, the uniform has consistently symbolized the ideals of Girl Scouting, including sashes to hold badges and pins. From the 1950s to the 1960s, uniforms changed along with the fashions of the day.

Brownies 1956
-
In 1956, the skirt of the Brownie uniform was changed to a six-gored style. Made of light brown, combed cotton broadcloth, the Brownie uniform could be worn either with a self-belt or the official elastic belt. In 1956, "Girl Scouts of the USA" was added to the uniform over the breast pocket.
Intermediate and Seniors Alternate Uniforms 1951
-
Among other changes, an alternate uniform for both Intermediate and Senior Girl Scouts became available in 1951. The Intermediate Girl Scout alternate uniform consisted of a blouse and skirt, Girl Scout beret and Windsor tie, while Senior Girl Scouts had an alternate overseas-style hat.

Adult Dress 1953 and Suit 1956
-
The adult dress was introduced in 1953 and a suit in 1956. The adult dress was green with a shirred back, sleeves that were tapered, slanted pockets and a neckline with white pique trim. The 1956 green suit included short sleeves, adjustable side tabs and buttons on the collar and lapels.
"Two additional new hats --- a pillbox beret in fine fur felt, designed by Sally Victor, one of America's foremost millinery designers, and a soft beret in green acetate and rayon gabardine --- were developed for adults," according to the Girl Scouts website.
Juniors 1963
-
The first Junior Girl Scout uniform was adapted from the previous Intermediate Girl Scout uniform. The lapel was modified and buttons were taken from the collar in 1962. A yellow tie and a badge sash with a dark green beret were part of this uniform, as was a green elastic belt.
Cadettes 1963
-
A uniform for the new Cadette Scouts came into existence in 1963 as a white blouse and green skirt, similar to the Intermediate Girl Scouts alternate uniform. The blouse's pocket had a trefoil design. An arrow-shaped, dark green tie was part of the uniform as was a cockade on the Girl Scout beret.
