Enjoy a barbeque celebration for Labor Day.

Labor Day is a holiday weekend where many families in the United States get together and celebrate the long weekend. Part of enjoying a long weekend can include spending time at the beach or park, hosting a gathering with friends and neighbors, or simply spending quality time with the family. Since the weather is often nice in September, Labor Day is a great time to get one last barbecue lunch or dinner in before having to pack the grill up for winter.

  1. Pack It Up

    • Rather than spend time at home, pack the family and food up and enjoy a day at a local park or beach. To host a barbeque away from home, you will need to gather all of your food essentials, including hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and soda, into portable carriers. If you do not feel comfortable using grills supplied by the park or beach, purchase a small, one-time-use grill at a local superstore or outdoor center. To entertain everyone, bring plenty of outdoor toys, such as kites, baseballs and gloves, water toys, buckets and sidewalk chalk.

    Roughing It

    • Make your Labor Day celebration a day and night party by turning your backyard into a campground, complete with campfire and barbecue pit. Before the day's festivities begin, have everyone pitch their tents in the backyard and set up their campsites. For lunch and dinner, cook hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill and for dessert, cook s'mores by the campfire. During the day, play games such as water balloon toss and go on bug hunts; at night, tell stories around the campfire and play flashlight tag.

    Traditional Family BBQ

    • Get everyone in your family together to enjoy a barbecue complete with gossip and lively conversation. Labor Day is the perfect time to see family you may not normally get to visit because everyone is so busy with work. Make it a potluck occasion by asking everyone in the family to bring different food items or games for the adults and kids to play. A family barbecue can become a tradition when you host it at a different family member's house each year.

    Neighborly BBQ

    • A block party is a way to get together with the entire neighborhood and enjoy the long weekend with one big party. A few weeks before the party, have everyone on the block sign up for different responsibilities, such as bringing food, tables or servingware. If possible, block off sections of your road with cars or barricades and have the party in the center of the block. For the entertainment, host kids' games and water games, set up sprinklers or small pools, or rent a bounce house. Before making final plans, check your city's local ordinances to see if you are required to have a permit to have a block party.
