Scarf Organization Ideas

A thick, cold-weather scarf should be separated from thinner, more decorative scarves.

If you only have one or two scarves, organizing them is not an issue. On the other hand, if you have many of them, and in multiple colors or for different purposes and seasons, an organizational system is called for. Before you consider implementing any organization idea and start buying the things needed to implement it, first do a thorough review of the things you own and consider, too, what you plan to buy in the future. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Wall of Scarves

    • If your scarf collection is more decorative then utilitarian in nature, a wall of scarves can work for you and is a colorful and inexpensive way to show them off. Cluster groupings of like fabrics. In other words, hang silk scarves near other silk scarves and cotton scarves near other cotton scarves. Stick push pins into a designated wall space and simply hang a scarf from each pin. If you'd rather not leave a wall full of pin pricks, instead place cork tiles or a cork board on the wall and stick the pins into that. Alternatively, buy hooks with adhesive backing and stick them to the wall.

    Protective Containers

    • If you have a collection of vintage or otherwise delicate scarves -- a collection that you inherited from a grandmother, for example -- keep them away the dust and the sunlight, which over time can fade a scarf's vibrancy. Use a clear plastic container with compartments to keep them all separated and easy to scan and retrieve when you decide to wear one. Slip the box under a bed or in a closet. If you are having trouble finding a good container with separate compartments, make your own compartments with thin cardboard, such as that from an old show box. Skip the heavy, corrugated cardboard; your scarves could snag on it.

    Specialty Hangers

    • If you don't have a lot of room to devote to storage, store the scarves in a closet on one of many specialty scarf hangers on the market. Such specialty hangers come in different styles, but the primary feature that they have in common is a series of rings, bars or holes that allow them to accommodate many scarves at once. Of course, you could always hang the scarves from the bottom bar of a regular hanger, but it is likely that the scarves will get tangled with each other, making them less easy to keep neat over time.

If you are more of a do-it-yourself type of person, attach a few of the plastic rings that link up the cans from six packs to the bottom of a hanger with string.

    Shoe and Sweater Organizers

    • Over the door or hanging from a closet rod, compartmentalized storage that is meant for shoes and sweaters makes fairly ideal scarf storage. Use a larger sweater holder that hangs in the closet for bulkier scarves for winter and the shoe organizers for lighter weight scarves for the warm weather months and special occasions. If you are trying to tame the scarves of a whole household, use a hanging sweater organizer in the coat closet and assign each household member a compartment for their winter scarves, as well at hats and gloves.
