Food Merchandiser Jobs
Major food manufacturers hire employees and independent contractors to represent them in retail stores. Food merchandisers service and maintain the manufacturer's products. Pay rates can be reasonable, and an experienced merchandiser who is being paid a flat rate per store often can accomplish in 30 minutes what an inexperienced merchandiser may take two hours to complete. Most merchandisers get their assignments and report the results at the company's website online.

Job Details
-
Food manufacturers must at one time or another hire a merchandiser, either as an employee or an independent contractor. These types of jobs typically can be found online. Food manufacturers such as candy and snack companies need merchandisers to restock, replenish and maintain their products in retail stores. The food merchandiser helps take inventory of a certain product so the manufacturer can keep the required amount of product available to the consumer. Merchandisers also introduce new products into displays, take down older displays and remove outdated products according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Explicit Instructions
-
Food merchandisers ensure that the products are available in the right sizes and varieties according to explicit instruction from the manufacturer. Most companies have specific diagrams called plan-o-grams that show how the product is to look on the shelves. It is the merchandiser's responsibility to correct displays that are set wrong. Many times store employees do not follow the manufacturer's instructions of how the product is to be displayed. Food merchandisers typically make weekly or monthly visits to ensure compliance with manufacturer instructions on products, displays and signage.

Food Demonstrators
-
Food merchandisers also can be hired as food demonstrators to set up a mock kitchen in grocery stores and cook and serve samples of food products to passing customers. The customer may receive a discount coupon for the purchase of the product. Companies that produce meat, snacks, yogurt and other frozen treats do this on a regular basis to introduce new products. Demonstration jobs typically last five to eight hours each time and are normally performed on weekends when there are more customers in the store.
Sales Representatives and Delivery Drivers
-
Sales reps and delivery drivers must also act as food merchandisers. They inventory products to ensure sufficient amounts are available and restock the merchandise. They may report their findings when they return to the warehouse or through using a hand-held computer. There are also private food merchandisers, such as those that deliver and take orders for ice cream, meats and other frozen foods. Most retail employees are very receptive to merchandisers and delivery personnel as they understand that it means less work for them. Products shipped to the store directly are clearly marked that the box should be held for the merchandiser to pick up. In this case, store employees do not open the box or attempt to place the product on the store shelves, saving this work for the company's food merchandisers.
