New York Veterans Benefits

In addition to federal benefits, New York State resident veterans may qualify for various benefits offered by the Empire State. Certain benefits are available to all honorably discharged veterans while others pertain only to those with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs-certified disabilities or those who served on active duty during wartime.

  1. Property Tax Exemptions

    • New York State veterans may receive property tax exemptions based on active duty service during wartime or disability status. Spouses of qualified veterans or the surviving spouse of a deceased qualified veteran who does not remarry are also eligible. Dollar limitations, as well as limitations on the actual amount of property that qualifies for tax exemption for eligible veterans, may be imposed by state and local laws.

    Hunting and Fishing Licenses

    • Veterans with a minimum 40 percent disability rating as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may receive state hunting and fishing licenses at reduced fees. Eligible veterans must be New York state residents for at least one month before applying for the licenses.

    Veterans Homes

    • New York veterans in need of nursing home care may qualify for admittance into one of the five veterans homes in the state, four of which are operated by the State Department of Health and one by the State University of New York's Health Sciences Center. The four veterans homes operated by the State Department of Health are located in Montrose, Batavia, Oxford and Jamaica, while SUNY operates the Long Island Veterans Home in Stony Brook. At all facilities, admission priority is based on the veteran's need for care and the extent of his disability or illness. Spouses of veterans also qualify for nursing home benefits if they have been married for at least one year. Legally separated spouses are ineligible.

    Education Benefits

    • In addition to federal GI Bill education benefits, New York state residents may also qualify for Veterans Tuition Awards. Veterans matriculating in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a New York State institution of higher learning may be eligible for these awards for full- or part-time study. Veterans enrolled in an approved New York state vocational or technical training program may also receive the award. Full-time undergraduate students may receive funding equal to the full cost of tuition at a State University of New York, or the actual amount of tuition charged at the New York-based university the student attends, whichever is less. Part-time students may receive awards prorated by credit hours.
