Ancient Greece is a highly romanticized culture, and the art, literature and theology of the period are commonly referenced today. Yet, like in any culture, the people lived day-to-day lives and used tools and other items to help them with their activities and daily rituals. Wars were common between Greece and its surrounding areas, so weapons were also mass produced for the large Greek army.

  1. Tools Of War

    • The early Greeks, like the Mycenaeans, were a warrior culture. Painted frescoes often showed the Mycenaeans in great battles and their dead were buried with weapons and helmets or shields. Weapons were commonly made out of wood or stone. It was not until around 800 BC when iron was cast for weaponry. Some were able to afford to have bronze weapons. Spears were made from long wooden rods with a sharpened rock fastened to the end. Shields were typically made of wood and covered with leather. Chariots were constructed out of wood and dragged by horses. Helmets were generally made of leather and had boar hair or tusks sewn on to intimidate enemies.

    Greek Housing

    • Houses in Ancient Greece were made out of wood, plaster and clay. People of meager means typically lived in a house with one to three rooms and holes in the walls for windows. Rich Greeks lived in large homes with several rooms and multiple levels. Roofs were made from dried clay, and were made in much the same way pottery was created. The clay was formed into tiles and the tiles were laid on top of each other in a descending fashion. The walls of the houses were made from mud bricks covered in plaster.

    Farming and Game Tools

    • As ancient cultures evolved from hunting and gathering communities to farming cultures, the tools for cultivating food changed. An ancient from of the plow, called a Arotron, was used to turn the land. Although the dry and nutrient-weak soil made the cultivation of many foods difficult, it was well suited from growing olive trees. The olives were collected in wicker baskets to be sold in the market. Fishermen used nets made of braided rope to catch fish in the Mediterranean Sea to sell in the market.

    Greek Clothing

    • Clothing in ancient Greece was made mostly out of linen or wool. This fabric was folded into a long rectangle and pinned with holes for the head and arms. A braided rope or chain was typically tied around the waist. These garments were called Chitons or Peplos. Rich Greeks were able to afford finer textiles, such as cotton or silk. Men wore broad rimmed hats made from straw while traveling. Women, who typically did not cut their hair, tied it up with lengths of ribbon.
