Integration Projects in Criminal Justice

Courts of all types make use of integrated data.

In criminal justice, integration projects aim to make information more available by building an integrated and accessible data storage system. Integrated data storage systems make information on arrests and court proceedings easily available to court officers. Such systems go a long way toward preventing backlog in the criminal justice system.

  1. Fingerprint Identification System

    • Fingerprint identification systems are used to upload and search data from post-arrest fingerprinting. Using a fingerprint identification system, police can match fingerprints from a crime scene with fingerprints from arrest records. Because no two people have the same fingerprints, matches obtained through fingerprint identification systems constitute very strong evidence in court.

    Data Search Systems

    • Criminal justice search systems are used to look up data regarding anything in the criminal justice system. A user may search crime scene descriptions, evidence descriptions, or even a suspect's criminal history. Today, most search systems are computerized.

    Sex Offender Registry

    • Sex offender registries are systems of data on sex offenders. Sex offenders registries are publicly searchable; anyone can search for names and see whether they are on the sex offender registry. Sex offender registries are somewhat controversial but do provide some people with closure when they see suspicious activity in their communities.

    Incident Reporting System

    • Incident reporting systems allow private citizens to report suspicious activity to the police. People can submit incident reports confidentially via telephone or via online forms such as the US-Cert Incident Reporting System. Incident reports are different from ordinary police calls in that they are not used to call on the police to deal with a situation immediately, but rather, to suggest a line of investigation for police to follow.

    Arrest Photograph Repository

    • Arrest photograph repositories consist of searchable galleries of mugshots and arrest photos. Photograph repositories are useful when police need to post wanted ads for a suspect who has gone missing. Photographs from repositories can sometimes be used to create rough approximations of what a person would look like after "x" number of years of aging, as the photos are taken directly face-on and directly to the side.
