Purchase the type of suit that best fits you.

Men wear suits for a variety of occasions, from parties to weddings to funerals. Though trends come and go, well-fitting suits, made of cotton or wool, are almost always in style. Typically, suits are available in gray, black or blue, with or without pinstripes. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. European Styles

    • Italian suits use a double-breasted jacket with shoulder pads, pleated pants and slit pockets. Italian suits are considered fashionable and compliment tall men with long torsos. English suits use three buttons and three pockets. The lapel is of a medium size, and the pants are either pleated or double pleated. The pleated pants and multiple buttons help hide any pockets of fat. British suits are often found in plaid or pinstripes and look more formal than other models.

    American Suits

    • American suits use a jacket with a medium size lapel, no shoulder pads, a single vent and three external pockets with flaps. The pants are not pleated and their front flares. These pants show the natural shape of the leg more than other suit styles, and the buttons that close the jacket form a V-shape, complimenting broad shoulders and chests.

    Mandarin Suit

    • A Mandarin suit varies the most from traditional suits and is associated with priests and Asian countries. The suit uses a short, erect collar called a Mandarin collar. The buttons of a Mandarin suit go up the entire length of the jacket. These suits are worn without a tie, over a Mandarin suit.

    Casual versus Formal

    • Suits with fewer buttons, lighter colors and unique patterns give a more casual connotation. Dark suits, worn with classic ties and shoes are more formal. Typically, men wear formal suits to weddings and upscale business events while they wear casual suits to family events and during everyday work. To make a suit look more casual, wear it without a tie or over a T-shirt. Tuxedos are the fanciest suits of all and differ from a traditional suit in that they include a gray or black vest and bow tie.
