Uses for Easter Peeps

Uses for Easter Peeps thumbnail
Peeps come an Easter treat.

Created by the Just Born Inc. candy company in 1953, Easter Peeps have become an Easter basket staple. Easter Peeps, marshmallow treats shaped like bunnies and chicks, come in colors such as pink, yellow and blue. Though these cute candies make for a yummy treat, they have other uses, too. Consider using them for more than Easter basket filler. Be careful, though, so children and others don't eat any Peep used in a craft project. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. In Foods

    • Of course, Peeps can be eaten alone, just as they are meant to be eaten. They can be used to enhance other foods as well. Use Peeps in place of traditional marshmallows in mugs of hot chocolate. Peeps also make a cute decorative element on an Easter buffet tray. Display Easter cookies and cakes on a pretty tray and use Peeps to decorate. Consider using Peeps, instead of traditional marshmallows, to make rice cereal treats.

    In Crafts

    • Easter Peeps are a food item, so their shelf life isn't as long as traditional craft items. Don't let that deter you from using these as a craft item. Create an Easter candy dish out of Peeps. Use glue to attach Peeps to the outside of an inexpensive glass bowl. Fill the bowl with jelly beans or foil-covered chocolate eggs. You can also use Peeps to make cute Easter pin. Simply glue a safety pin backing to the back of a Peep. Once dry, pin it to clothes. Create a centerpiece by gluing Peeps to a foam ball and poking sticks into the bottom of the ball. Push the exposed sticks into another foam ball that has the bottom sheared off so it's flat. Cover the bottom ball with floral moss and sprinkle sparkle over your creation to form a whimsical Easter Peeps topiary.

    As a Toy

    • Children are always told not to play with their food, so imagine their surprise if you tell them to play with their Easter Peeps. Create fun houses out of graham crackers and icing (similar to a gingerbread house) for the Peeps to live in. You can even create an entire town and allow the kids to place the Peeps in houses and other buildings.

    As an Educational Tool

    • Peeps come in different style animals and different colors. Because of this, they can be used to teach sorting and counting to young children. Ask children to separate all the chick Peeps into one group and the bunnies into another. Then have the children resort the piles by color. Teach simple math by giving the child some Easter Peeps and adding yours with theirs. Subtraction is the most fun, as you can eat the Peeps to demonstrate how to "take away" a Peep.
