A birthday party with a theme is always a fun idea, and for the sports fan, choosing a theme is a no-brainer. Preparing the food and decorations for a sports-themed birthday party is fairly easy considering how many sports-related products and party items are available. The cake is usually one of the main focuses of a birthday party and many bakeries will customize a sports-themed cake for you. Custom cakes are usually available in football, basketball. soccer ball or even bowling pin themes, either as the shape itself, or just the colors and trimmings. Alternatively, make your own sports-themed cake at home. There is a wide selection of specialized pans, tools and decorations available for homemade cakes.
Snacks

Appropriate munching snacks would be those that are typically sold at games, such as popcorn, peanuts, pretzels and chips. Mini corn-dogs and sliders are other ideas, depending on what you're serving as the main dish. Place snacks in sports-themed bowls and dishes. Small plates and cocktail napkins with the same theme could also be used for the snacks.

Meatballs are a good party food option because they can be used for sandwiches and can be made into a sports-theme food item by creating different sizes. Let the guests know that the meatballs are representing different sized sports balls such as basketballs, golf balls, soccer ball and baseballs. Make a game by having the guests guess what size meatball is which sports ball. The meatballs can be served with pasta on the side or rolls to make sporty meatball sandwiches.

This is an especially good idea for an outdoor party with a BBQ grill. In addition, serve french fries and set up a condiment station with ketchup, mustard, relish, onions and pickles. Don't forget coolers filled with beer and soda.
