Animal Cake Decorating Ideas

Cake decorating is as much a creative endeavor as it is an exercise in baking technique. Common themes can be mixed with the unique vision of the person making the cake, including animal themes. With some practice and experimentation, cakes can be formed in the image of any animal. Whether the image is abstract or representational, an animal-themed cake can accompany a variety of celebrations.

    1. Party Themes

      • Animal cakes can be made to complement a variety of theme parties, and can even be the inspiration for such a party. For example, consider hosting a tropical-themed party. Along with decorations like palm trees, pineapples and bright floral arrangements, a cake decorated to resemble a tropical animal can be served. Monkeys and toucans are two examples. Other party themes that can support an animal-themed cake are aquatic- or farm-themed parties.

      Shape

      • By changing the shape of the cake, a wider variety of animal types can be represented. Also, different angles or representations of a single animal can be made. While traditional round cakes easily lend themselves to being decorated with an animal's face, by experimenting with shape, animals in a variety of poses can be achieved. For instance, you can cut the edge of a pound cake loaf, set it upright on that end and carve a shark emerging from the water from the loaf. Alternatively, cut a round cake in half and place both curved ends next to each other to create a pair of butterfly wings.

      Decorations

      • The icing colors used for animal cakes should not necessarily by the color of the animal in real life, but rather the colors traditionally associated with those animals. A zebra cake, for instance, will likely be black and white, rather than having stripes of various colors, such as occurs in real life. Lion cakes may be bright orange while monkey cakes can have yellow mouths and ears to contrast with their brown fur. Of course, more realistic colors can be used. Additionally, various types of candies can be used for physical features. Sugar cookies can become round ears, licorice can be shaped into a mouth, and marshmallows can be cut into the shape of large, jagged teeth.

      Flavors

      • The flavor of the cake can actually be used to further decorate or complement the animal cake. When creating a cake decorated like a monkey, for example, banana-flavored cream can be added as a cake filling to tie the theme together. Alternatively, consider making a rabbit-themed cake from carrot cake.
