National Guard Basic Training Pay
New recruits in the Army or Air National Guard attend active-duty basic training and earn active-duty pay during basic training. Once basic training is completed, they earn "drill pay" for each drill weekend served. While military pay is based on time in service and by pay grade, all National Guard members are required to attend basic training during their first year of military service. Members enter the military at the pay grade of E-1 through E-4, depending upon the amount of college credits they have and other variables.

An E-1 in the Army National Guard is called a Private; in the Air National Guard it is an Airman Basic. An E-1 is paid at the active-duty rate of $1,467.60 per month during basic training. Once basic training is finished, an E-1 in the Army or Air National Guard earns $195.68 for each National Guard drill weekend.

An E-2 in the Army National Guard is also called a Private; in the Air National Guard an E-2 is referred to as an Airman. An E-2 is paid at the active-duty rate of $1,644.90 per month during basic training. Once basic training is completed, an E-2 earns a monthly rate of $219.32 per National Guard drill weekend.

An E-3 is paid at the starting rate of $1,729.80 per month during basic training. Once basic training is completed, an E-3 earns a monthly rate of $230.64 per National Guard drill weekend.

An E-4 in the Army National Guard is referred to as a Specialist. Certain E-4s can be promoted to the leadership role of Corporal, which is a junior Non-Commissioned Officer, but a promotion to Corporal never happens during basic training. An E-4 in the Air National Guard is called a Senior Airman. An E-4 is paid at the monthly rate of $1,916.10 during basic training. Once basic training is completed, an E-4 earns a monthly rate of $255.48 per National Guard drill weekend.
