Youth Activities for Valentine's Day

Celebrate Valentine's Day with group activities.

While Valentine's Day is typically associated with couples and quiet, romantic times, there is no reason a group can't celebrate as well. Leaders of youth groups can sponsor a variety of activities that get youth involved and perhaps distract them from romantically charged environments that might be inappropriate for younger teens.

  1. Valentine's Day Dance

    • Sponsor a dance if you're looking for something that provides couples a safe, supervised environment to interact. However, make sure that noncouples are welcomed as well. Consider sponsoring group dances such as square dancing or creating a themed dance in which instructors will teach dances from that era. For example, a Roaring 20s Valentine's Day Dance could have instructors teaching the Charleston and a jazz band playing.

    Cupid's Scavenger Hunt

    • Consider having teens bring back stories from every couple they take pictures of.

Create a lover's scavenger hunt where the participants are seeking out love-related clues. Give each team a camera to take pictures of the items on the hunt. You might send them searching for such things as the couple that was most recently married or a couple that has been married the longest. You could have them find the most expensive diamond engagement ring or the most beautiful wildflower (if you live somewhere that has flowers blooming in February).

    Circle of Love

    • For a group activity that focuses on types of love other than romantic, play a ball-tossing circle game. Have everyone sit or stand in a circle. Give one person a ball and have her toss it to someone else in the circle. The person who catches it must toss it to someone who hasn't yet received the ball. For round two, have them repeat the process except each time they throw the ball they have to say something that they love. For round three, repeat the process but the person throwing the ball has to state something they love about the person he is tossing the ball to.

    Murder Mystery

    • Hold a murder mystery party with a Valentine's Day theme. Make it a dinner party with Valentine's Day or mystery-themed foods. A couple of Valentine's Day mystery themes include "A Broken Heart Murder on Valentine's Day," "A St. Valentine's Day Murder Mystery," "A Broken Heart Murder on Valentine's Day," "Death by Chocolate," "Love Potion Number Five" and "The Great Chocolate Mystery."
