Some Spider-Man games target younger boys while others cater to teens.

Boys around the world have looked up to Spider-Man since the hero's first appearance in 1962, enjoying the Marvel superhero across comic books, toys, television shows and films. Spidey's video game history dates back to the 1970s, and the character continues to enjoy popularity as the star or supporting cast member of numerous modern games. Different Spider-Man games cater to the tastes and age levels of different Spidey fans, including boys -- and girls -- young and old.

  1. Spider-Man: Friend or Foe

    • "Spider-Man: Friend or Foe" for PC, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable platforms offers cartoon styled action-adventure. The game initially puts the player in Spidey's shoes, but as the hero defeats his enemies, players take on the roles of villains including Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Rhino, Scorpion and Venom. Across levels as diverse as Nepal and Tokyo, Spider-Man and his rogues gallery unite to take on a greater enemy. The game features 10 levels, a single-player campaign and versus game play with a story written by comic scribe Brian Reed. This game caters to boys of all-ages -- including new fans and Spider-Man veterans -- with an Entertainment Software Ratings Board rating of "E" for "Everyone."

Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet

    • "Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet" for the DS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii targets younger boys with its simplified game play and cute character designs. Spider-Man joins a cast of other Marvel heroes including Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Wolverine and the Fantastic Four. Parents can join the game as "The Infinity Gauntlet" features drop-in and drop-out cooperative game play. Players collect Infinity Gem fragments to unlock bonus levels and costumes as they fight the evil Doctor Doom and solve puzzles throughout Super Hero City. The ESRB rates this game "E 10+" for comic mischief, animated blood and cartoon violence.

    Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

    • Teens, older boys and devout comics fans might enjoy "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions" -- available on the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, DS and Wii -- as this game encompasses darker themes and includes elements from Spidey's long history. In this story-heavy action game, which features a comic-like ink-on-paper visual style, players control Spider-Man as he combats Mysterio and seeks the Tablet of Order and Chaos. Players can choose iconic comic book versions of the character, including the standard hero, the film-noir styled Spider-Man Noir, the futuristic Spider-Man 2099 or the younger Ultimate Spider-Man. Due to mild language, some suggestive themes and violence, the ESRB rates "Shattered Dimensions" "T" for "Teen."

    Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

    • The PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii versions of "Spider-Man: Web of Shadows" all target teenagers and older boys, with a dark story, realistic graphics and a "T" rating. Handheld versions of this adventure game on the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable -- as well as the PlayStation 2 version -- lighten the content a bit, paring the game down to a cartoonish 2-D side-scrolling action game. Across all platforms, gamers take on the role of Spider-Man as he contends with an alien takeover of New York City. Players switch between normal Spider-Man and the black-suited symbiote Spider-Man as they team up with Wolverine, Black Cat, Moon Knight and others. Comic fans may appreciate the game's branching story, which gives players numerous routes to take, each of which offers a different ending.
