Tips For Safe Driving in the Rain

Driving in the rain doesn't need to be dangerous if you pay attention to what you are doing and what is going on around you. Driving in the rain can be stressful, and using good driving tips can help reduce that stress and keep you safe.

  1. Headlights

    • Newer cars have a feature where the headlights turn on when the car starts no matter what the time of day or weather conditions. If your car is older or doesn't have this feature, always turn on your headlights when the sky darkens and looks like rain. Even if there are only a few sprinkles coming down, turning on your headlights helps you see better and allows others to see you.

    Wipers

    • Windshield wipers are needed even if there are only a few sprinkles. Those few raindrops can blur your vision and hinder your ability to see out of the window safely. Always keep your wipers in good condition and replace them when they become cracked, brittle or don't clean the window completely. If you have a rear window wiper, use it to clear the window so you can see out the rearview mirror while driving.

    Speed

    • Rain on the roads can be as slippery as ice. Slow down, but don't impede traffic. Some drivers may drive faster and pass you, but you will get to your destination safely if you reduce your speed on wet roads. It is easy to hydroplane if you hit a big puddle of water on the roadway. You will have more control of the car at a slower, but reasonable speed.

    Stopping

    • When driving in the rain, don't step on the brakes for a hard stop if at all possible. If you need to slow down, ease up on the gas and slow down naturally. If something happens in front of you and you need to stop fast, push down on the brakes, but be prepared to control the car as it may spin out or not want to stop on the wet roads.
