80s Themed Birthday Cakes

80s Themed Birthday Cakes thumbnail
Birthday cakes add a nice touch to tie together a party's theme.

What's old is new, and the '80s never go out of style for themed parties. Have a birthday cake designed to your liking, taking on a theme, such as neon pink and green icing, or a photo of your favorite '80s band iced right on top. Whatever your favorite '80s trend is, convey this in your birthday cake. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Video Games

    • The 1980s saw the rise of the video game industry, with arcades and home consoles such as Nintendo and Sega. Create a cake using characters from some of your favorite games, such as "Pac-Man," "Zelda" or "Duck Hunt." Or if you'd like to convey your love for Nintendo, create a cake in the shape of the original Nintendo Entertainment System's controllers -- the ones with the two red buttons. These games are '80s icons, and will instantly convey that theme to your party.

    Toys

    • Trends in the '80s were apparent in the toys that were produced, especially for young girls. Rainbow Brite, My Little Pony, Jem and the Holograms, Cabbage Patch Kids and Strawberry Shortcake were the most sought-after toys at Christmas during the decade. Create a cake in the shape of a My Little Pony, or have a picture of Rainbow Brite created in the cake's icing. If you need a cake to accommodate a large group of people, create a cabbage patch, complete with a couple of dolls set within.

    Colorful Cake

    • The '80s were all about color. If you're looking to create a cake in a short amount of time, but you still want to keep within your theme, make a sheet cake and ice it with neon pink and green frosting. Bold shapes, such as lightning bolts, checks and large circles were common in the '80s; consider piping on icing to the top of the cake in these shapes.

    Bands

    • Bands in the '80s were big, bold and loud. They became icons as the advent of the music video brought music right into peoples' homes. Do you like Duran Duran? Screen a picture of the band on your cake. Or maybe you were more into early Bad Religion, who celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2011. Create a Cross Buster cake with black, white and red icing. Whatever band you choose, make sure they are easily recognized as '80s icons.
