Stamped Cross Stitch Techniques

Stamped cross stitch eliminates the need to count stitches.

The two basic types of cross stitch patterns are counted cross stitch and stamped cross stitch. In counted cross stitch, the crafter uses a chart to count stitches and transfers them to the fabric. In stamped cross stitch, the pattern is already stamped on the fabric and the crafter uses the designated color of thread to follow the pattern. This eliminates the need for counting stitches.

  1. Starting Out

    • Make sure that you have everything that you need before you begin your stamped cross stitch including scissors, a needle and an embroidery hoop if you choose to use one. Read the instructions that come with your kit, and follow any special directions about washing or caring for your project. Carefully separate the different colors of embroidery floss and match each color of floss to the colors on your printed fabric. Pull the fabric over your embroidery hoop and start forming stitches near the center of the design.

    Creating a Design

    • Follow the pattern printed on your fabric, working on one area of a design at a time. Stitch a bit past each printed line in your pattern in order to make sure that your stitches will touch each other when the design is finished. For even stitches, insert your needle into the space between a set of crossed lines. Stitch the first half of each cross horizontally, then work your way back to finish each stitch.

    Adding Details

    • If the stamped pattern on your fabric only shows a portion of a cross instead of a whole one, stitch what the pattern shows. Insert your needle just past the end of each line to ensure that your design is filled out correctly. Complete all of the cross-stitching in your pattern first, then do any backstitching or other embellishments. Pay attention to the instructions for any special stitches as they may be different from those for regular cross stitches.

    Final Steps

    • Keep in mind that not all of the stamped areas of your project will need to be stitched. It is best to refer to the instructions that come with your project if you are not sure if an area should be stitched or not. Once you have stitched all of the required areas, rinse the cloth in cold water to dissolve the stamped pattern marks. Let it air dry completely, and frame or display it however you like.
