With states reducing budgets and cutting teaching positions, finding a good high-paying teaching job is more important than ever. Most school districts pay basically the same wages. Teachers need to be creative in finding jobs that pay better wages. These positions can be found with a bit of research and thinking outside the box.

  1. States and Districts with Higher Paying Salaries

    • Not all states provide the same starting salary. School districts in the same state also differ in pay. Research to find which districts and states provide the best income. American Federation of Teachers (AFT) lists the four highest-paying states as California, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York.

    Prison Teaching Jobs

    • Prisons offer a higher teacher salary. Salaries will differ according to who runs the prison and where they are located. A survey conducted by Salary Expert.com lists teacher prison salaries ranging from $43,726 in Boston to $72,592 in Manhattan.

    The Job Corps

    • The Job Corps serves youths aged 16 to 24. Job Corps centers are located across the United States. These centers offer GED classes and technical trades. Some Job Corps hire directly, while other hire through a company or agency that owns them. They offer high salaries for teachers, than a traditional school system. According to Glassdoor.com, a welding instructor earns $20 to $25 an hour, or around $48,000 to $50,000 a year.

    Virtual Schools

    • Virtual schools offer instructions over the Internet with frequent teacher contact by phone, email or chat room. Lessons are completed on line. Teachers salaries are generally higher for a virtual school versus a brick-and-mortar school. The Florida Virtual School beginning teacher salary is $42,697 to $67,853. Remember when applying for a virtual school that most are in session all year.
