Figure out a solution that will work until you can do a major remodel, or make all your changes now. Does this Spark an idea?

Freshen a Dated Bathroom
-
Use color to improve a tired-looking space. If your bathroom looks somewhat worn, you don't necessarily have to change a lot. You can easily paint the ceiling and walls, lay new vinyl flooring and install a new sink, for example. Painting the walls a pale neutral color, such as light parchment, works well with bright or deeper accent colors for towels and rugs, such as purple or hunter green.
Replace Old Fixtures
-
If your sink or bathtub is yellow or blue, chances are they're 40 or so years old. Update the bathroom by changing just the sink, bathtub and toilet, and wait until later to add new wallpaper or flooring if you need to. Select fixtures that will still look good several years from now to avoid having to update them again when you add your wallpaper and flooring.

Make a Utilitarian Bath More Spa-like
-
Strive for an upscale remodel if you're tired of your get-in and get-out bathroom. Invest in high-end features. Consider a jetted tub, a two-person shower with multiple shower heads, recessed lighting with a dimmer switch and a large vanity with vessel bowls. As a finishing touch, install crown molding.
Expand Space That's Too Small
-
If your bathroom feels cramped, look for ways to make it look bigger. Use floor space from a nearby walk-in closet in a bedroom, for example. Use the additional space for a larger bathtub or shower. Also consider a larger window to let in more light and make the room seem larger, as well as a bigger mirror over the vanity.
Completely Revamp What Will Not Do
-
If you know the bathroom will hurt the value of your home, invest in an extensive remodel. Maybe your home is already up for sale, or it's going up for sale. It sometimes pays to remove all fixtures and totally redo the bathroom. Talk with your real estate agent beforehand, though, to make sure your remodel will pay off in terms of homebuyer interest.
