Recognition Ideas for Employees

Recognizing employees motivates them to improve performance.

When you run a business, recognizing the hard work of your employees is an important aspect of the job. In showing them that you notice their efforts, you let them know they are appreciated and valued; often, recognition leads to increased job satisfaction and lower turnover rate, which benefit your business in both the long and short terms.

  1. Personal Thanks

    • You do not need a big budget to recognize your employees' work. Often, small, personal touches are more meaningful than an awards dinner or a name on a plaque. To thank your employees on a day-to-day basis, write small notes, come over to recognize them during the workday and direct executives and top managers to extend thanks in person. In doing so, you let your staff know that you are paying attention and that you care enough to take time out of your day to thank them.

    Flex Time

    • For employees who spend the bulk of each day in the office, flex time is a valuable opportunity. Recognize great work by giving your staff time to deal with personal duties and relax. Offer work-from-home days, surprise them with an unexpected afternoon off or give the option to leave early or come in late. With the extra time, they can get things done that can only be done during business hours and take care of personal matters so they don't interfere with work. You can also give each staff member a certain number of personal days to take as needed to do whatever they want without a reason or excuse. By giving flexible time, you show employees that you respect and value their lives outside of work.

    Reward Ideas and Effort

    • Results-based rewards leave out employees who work extremely hard but are unable to succeed for various reasons beyond their control; the lack of recognition can stifle creativity. To promote innovative thinking, reward great ideas as well as great results. Give them a treat after a hard week or a good idea that didn't pan out: a spa gift certificate, in-office massages, an impromptu happy hour, or take them out to lunch. In doing so, you inspire the creativity that will help your business grow.

    Small Treats

    • Small treats go a long way in showing your staff that you appreciate their work. Bring in ice cream on a hot day or order in lunch on a day when everyone is tired or down. Bring in cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, births and weddings to let them know you care about them as people as well as employees. You can also do small things that will brighten an otherwise routine day, like putting a flower on each desk or passing out little thank you cards with personal messages.
