A little extra thought will allow you to give your father a gift he'll never forget.

Christmas is a time for giving, and, for many of people, a time to wrack their brains for what to get people. It can be particularly difficult to buy for family and parents, especially if you've moved away or haven't spoken to them for a while. With careful planning, though, you can give a gift that will cause joy on the day and lasting happy memories after it.

  1. Driving Days

    • Major U.K. racetracks run regular driving days. These are essentially "play days" that allow fans to drive their own cars around the track, drive super cars with the supervision of an instructor or even spend time racing Formula 1-style cars. Prices range from £50 up to £120. The legendary Silverstone track in particular has a wide variety of track days available.

    Cookery Course

    • Cooking is a social exercise as well as a culinary one, and a cookery course is a perfect way to not only increase your father's skills in the kitchen but help build up his confidence. There are courses available in everything from chocolate making to sushi, but a curry cookery course is a must if your father likes his food hot.

    Vintage Movie Posters

    • Bring your dad's favorite movie into his home by giving him a print of the film's poster. Movie posters are big business and, if you can afford it, you could get an original poster that was actually hung in a cinema. Alternately, several companies sell prints of movie posters. While these have been re-sized, they're still beautiful, memorable gifts.

Tickets to the U.K. Air Guitar Championships

    • Does your dad rock? Or think he does? If so, buy him a ticket to the U.K. Air Guitar Championships. Entering its 17th year, the contest tours the country, taking in cities from Cardiff and Derry to Edinburgh and Brighton before the big finale in London. The event is huge fun and if your dad's feeling particularly brave, he could always take to the stage and try his luck.
