OnStar tracks all your vehicle's movements while providing multiple monthly services.

If you own a vehicle manufactured by General Motors within the past few years, chances are it is equipped with the OnStar service. For a monthly fee, drivers have access to a number of features through OnStar that help them stay safe on the road and keep their vehicle in good working condition.

  1. Emergency Services

    • Even the most careful driver can have an accident and OnStar includes emergency services to help if you do. When your vehicle is in a crash, OnStar automatically notifies emergency services of your location, the number of impacts, whether the car rolled over or the air bags deployed and how fast you were driving during the crash. This automatic notification helps get assistance to you faster, even when you cannot call for help yourself. OnStar also includes a red emergency button to push to reach an advisor if you have a medical emergency, see an emergency out on the road or need to respond to an Amber Alert.

    Navigation

    • If you have the OnStar service, there is no need to purchase a separate GPS navigation device. By pushing the OnStar button, you'll be connected to an advisor who provides directions to any destination. If you subscribe to the OnStar Directions and Connections service, also input your destination into the eNav system through either Google Maps or Mapquest. When you look up directions from either website on your computer before leaving home, send the directions directly to your vehicle from the site using the vehicle username designated when you subscribed to the service. When underway, push the OnStar button to access these directions and avoid getting lost.

    Maintenance

    • Vehicles that run well are more efficient. OnStar runs regular onboard diagnostic checks to ensure your engine, brakes, transmission, emissions and air bags are all working properly. Subscribers to the diagnostic service receive monthly reports about their vehicle, as well as monthly maintenance reports notifying whether service is necessary. OnStar also monitors tire pressure and alerts you if you need to make adjustments. If something happens while you're driving the vehicle, such as an indicator light or chime, press the OnStar diagnostic button and find out exactly what the problem is.

    Security

    • OnStar also helps to locate your vehicle, whether stolen or just lost in a large parking lot. If you're vehicle is stolen, OnStar can usually locate it using GPS. Depending on your vehicle, OnStar also locks the ignition, making it impossible to start the car once it has been turned off, or works with local law enforcement to slow down and turn off the vehicle if someone who stole it is driving it. OnStar also includes roadside assistance that sends your exact location to a towing service or gas station and is capable of unlocking your vehicle remotely if you lock your keys in the car.

    Calling

    • If you need to make a call when you're on the road, OnStar helps you connect without taking your hands of the wheel. Press the button and use voice dialing. Also download an OnStar application to your iPhone or Android device that lets you unlock the car, start the engine and run diagnostics right from your phone.
