Jobs in the oil and gas field range from unskilled workers at refineries and pipelines to the most educated professionals such as geologists and executives. All types of jobs are available to individuals seeking a career in the oil and gas industry. Some require years of education or skilled-trades training, while other jobs include unskilled labors found in almost every other industry around the world.

  1. Administrative

    • The oil and gas field requires all types of administrative jobs, from the human resources department to the clerks on location at the oil and gas fields. Paperwork is a major part of the oil and gas industry. Administrative assistants, secretaries, human resources managers and other administrative jobs all have a place in the oil and gas field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more than 23 percent of the oil and gas well drilling jobs exist in Harris County, Texas, which is the Houston area. Administrative jobs accounted for some part of these positions.

    Professionals

      Professionals in the gas and oil field include geologists, finance professionals, business managers and other jobs requiring a specific college degree. Every oil and gas plant, drilling site and distribution center requires educated professionals to run different departments like the accounting department, executive jobs, finance department, research and development as well as other scientific departments and management oversight departments. All these professional jobs require a minimum of a four-year degree in a specialized field along with experience for the upper-level executive positions.

    Engineering

      A lot of engineering jobs are available in the oil and gas field. Applications engineers, service engineers, transportation and installation engineers, design engineers, electrical engineers and structural engineers work in the gas and oil field. The BLS expects there to be a 15 percent growth in engineering jobs in the oil and gas field from 2008 through 2018. The average annual salary of an engineer in this field is $96,030 as of May, 2008. The gas and oil field engineering professional is found in almost every U.S. state and in most oil- and gas-rich countries.

    Oil and Gas Rig

    • Many different jobs are available at the oil and gas drilling sites. The drilling site houses many different workers for long periods of time. This makes available a lot of manual labor positions such as cooks to feed the crew, clean-up personnel to maintain the drilling site, drivers and other entry-level jobs not requiring any additional education beyond a high school diploma. Skilled trades jobs are also available at the oil and gas rigs. Electricians, plumbers, drilling professionals and mechanics all work on oil and gas drilling sites whether on land or offshore. Job growth in this oil and gas field is expected to drop over the next ten years, according to BLS. The average hourly wage for oil and gas personnel is $18.08 an hour as of 2008.
